Tire Pressure

Okay i have the 18" Rugged trail T/A BF Goodrich tires. The sticker and the tire say to inflate to 35 PSI, however, when inflated to that pressure the tires still look underinflated. Does anyone else use a different pressure or am i concerned about nothing?

As long as it handles correctly, and gives the ride you want AND you do not receive "over" or "under" inflated tire wear, then stay with 35 lbs. Remember that is a cold measurement, like first thing in the morning, before you leave the house. Those big tires heat up quickly with just a little driving.

LSUFX4, I have the same setup as you.

Short answer: run 35 psi that's what I run.

Long answer: Our tire size is P275/65/R18. The "P" stands for "passenger tire." Ford also offers a "LT" tire which I believe stands for "Light Truck." The "LT" has a stiffer sidewall and is rated to carry a heavier payload than our "P" tires.

It is my belief that the Ford engineers wanted to compensate for the stiffer shocks and stiffer ride in the FX4 by putting a wide "P" tire on a narrow rim. With this kind of setup there is a purposeful curve in the sidewall which in essense acts like a shockabsorber. (If you run the recommended air pressure)

That curve in the sidewall has bugged for years in previous cars I've owned. I always felt the tires where underinflated. One day I played with different air pressure's to see how it changed the contact-patch of the tire in relation to the ground. Final conclusion: the recommended air pressure was the correct air pressure to use.

Just my 2 cents. . .I'm interested to hear what some of the other members have to say.

Guys....

That "bulge" that you are seeing around the bottom of your tires is NORMAL, and is nothing to be concerned about.....JUST AS LONG AS YOU ARE RUNNING THE RECOMMENDED AIR PRESSURE.

That "bulge" is an inherent design characteristic of ALL steel belted radial tires on ALL vehicles.....
