I have a new 2004 XLT, 4.0L. It came with a "wimpy" 1-inch trailer hitch. I would like to put a class III hitch on in place of the 1".
Ford wants to sell me a kit with an oil cooler, plumbing.. etc. $500 for the part + installation. I dont need this. I am not planning to pull anything heavy.
I am pulling a 5x8 utility trailer only so all I would like is the hitch. I see a class III in JC Whitney catalog for $99. I would like to get one that bolts on in place of the factory unit.
A Class III will allow you to tow upto 5000 lb trailer with 500 lb tongue weight. Your trailer couldn't possibly come close to that. Unless you are exceeding 2000 pounds and/or a tongue weight of 200 pounds-you're fine with stock!
