Getting to the back of the fuse block
Has anybody managed to gain access to the back of the big fuse block below the dashboard? I tried to get mine out tonight so I could tap into a switched circuit for foglights.
The darn thing is held in pretty tightly by the main harness. There wasn't enough slack in the wiring bundle to pull the fuse block down far enough to get to the rear.
Do I have to pull the whole dash out to get to that fuse block? Can anyone suggest another switched power source to tap (on in "on" position only, not "acc" position - 20amps or higher).

You might look into adding an auxillary circuit panel from Painless Wiring, especially if you plan on adding anything else in the future. That way you don't have all those splices and taps into your important factory wiring.

>You might look into adding an auxillary circuit panel from Painless Wiring,
Good point. I don't want to honker up my factory harness. But my first job out of college was installing cell phones in cars and I am very careful.
If I use an auxiliary panel, how would I get switched power on some of its circuits? I'd still have to tap into a wire off the ignition switch.

LAST EDITED ON 03-Apr-01 AT 06:14 PM (EST)[p]For ACC I'd pull it off of the radio Key-On power lead. But seeing how you want it on only in the RUN position, I'd try tapping off of the Blower Control Panel. It should come out pretty easy, and there should be power at the fan speed selector.

I finally just tapped into a wire coming off the ignition switch. There are at least two 10-12 gauge wires that are hot with the ignition in "on" position. And they're right there in plain sight once you remove the fuse panel cover under the steering wheel.
Tapping into a primary wire off the ignition switch is not the most sanitary thing to do, but I can use the tap to power an auxiliary fuse block later if I want to be sanitary.
