Does any one know what a 77 460 is supposed to be? I just traded my dirt bike for a 77 F150 with a 77 460, C6, NP205 and 4:ll, mini-spool in the rear. 35-15.5x15 tsl-sx. I have all reciepts, but I can't find any numbers for Horse power, tourque, or timing. any help would be nice.
according my book the last year for bi hp in the 460 was in 71 365@4600hp and500@2800toruqe 10.5 to1 compresion I'm assuming that was beacause of the heads but not sure, these are lincoln motors don't know if it would make a differance in a truck, and all ratings are at the back of the tranny.
What kind of mods would I need to do to wake up this 460? does everyone agree in the timing section, that it should be 16 BTDC? Another question regarding timing. When I put it at 14 the truck runs kick ***. If I take it on the freeway for about 10 miles it starts to clack like the valves are coming off. It loses all power and I have to stop and bump the timing back a little. Then it runs fine, but doesn't have the get go like it does at 14 degrees. I don't understand how it could run so well for a while and then take a dump. Any Ideas?
Sounds to me like you have an oil delivery problem, and your lifters are collapsing from lack of oil. NOT good.
Next time it does that, kill it, pull the dipstick and see how much oil is in the crankcase.
Very likely that you have partially clogged oil return holes in the heads, and all the oil is staying up top. When you stop it to reset the timing, it drains back down again. If this is the case, the oil level should read very low.
Another thing that can cause it is junk in the oil pan that gets sucked up against the pickup screen, and then settles back down when you kill the motor. With this, the oil level will be normal.
Mechanics sometimes scrape off sealer and allow it to get into the oil pan. The hunks are too big to come out when you change the oil. The natural suction on the oil pump screen pulls them up against the screen and shuts off the flow.
Either way, very bad. When your lifters are clacking, the bearings are also being wiped due to lack of lubrication.
I can't think of any way that timing could cause this.
