Well, curiosity got the best of me and I decided to go out and test drive a 2001 Silverado 2500HD 4x4, with the 5sp Allison and the Duramax, to see if it's all that it's hyped up to be. At first glance I noticed the hood being taller than the 1500 next to it. Which made it look kinda dumb. After walking around it, I noticed that it not only sat very low to the ground for a 4x4 3/4 ton, but the frame was visible just looking at the side of the truck. Not just the bottom part of the frame, but the whole thing (below cab only though), which looked dumb as well. After popping the hood I noticed something about the open room. There was none. Some nice colors though. I wonder why they chose aluminum heads and a cast block? Now the duramax was a little more quiet when compared to the powerstroke (both inside the cab and out), but the speed limiter set to 97 MPH kept me from making too much road noise. One more thing I didn't like was that they only offer trucks with IFS. Which is a nice ride, but not as strong as the Live axle FORD uses.
So after test driving that truck, then a 2001 F-350 4x4, PSD 6sp manual...... Chevy is getting better but not good enough to make me switch.
I agree, the Ford's have it all over the Chevy's, I noticed all the same things you did plus loof how big and low the front bumper hangs down, coupled with independent(yuk) front susp. there's no wonder why Ford SD's are #1!!!!!!!!
I noticed the front bumper/air dam setup as well. It looks more like a highway only truck, I wonder why they offer it as a 4x4?
But I wouldn't call it confidence, I sometimes like the thrill of taking a risk. But afterwards I figured out why they let me take it out without a salesman with me, OnStar. They knew where I was at all times and probably knew that I went 97 MPH!
Ever notice that you'll rarely find a Used SuperDuty at the dealership, or a 95-97 F-250HD with a PowerStroke in it for sale?
I've taken a look at the new 2001's also. Have you notice how dumb their trailer tow mirrors look? When you pull them out, the angle up! it looks so stupid. And they have steel bars, so when they are extended, you have this black plastic mirrow, with these two steel extender bars! And, have you looked at how the box is mounted on the frame? I can't even explain it, just look at it. Don't count on the box staying attached to the frame very well. Even though hitches and such are mounted right on the frame, you know that all of us, once and a while get crazy ideas and tie stuff to the box, and pull. Well I think you might just pull the box right off. The only thing I like about those new chevy's is the transmission temperature sensor. That's my 2 cents.
I didn't notice the mirrors or bed mounts. But I did notice the tranny temp gauge and message center (just turn on the cargo light and see what happens). My ex's 1999 Dodge 250 also has an auto tranny temp gauge in her truck.
I think the duallys look absolutely terrible! Did you notice the huge bowtie and abortion cab lights? i also hate the black tailight covers on the duallys. On the other hand they are very quiet!
Here is another thing that people overlook most of them you see driving around that look like 4x4's and sit up really tall are actually 4x2's my next door neighbor just bought one and I though he lifted it because chevy's have always sat low but it turns out it was stock AND 4x2!!!
Try and price parts and accessories for the Duramax. CHA-CHING.You'd better have some working capital set aside if you don't want to take out a loan for parts.
