Hi, i have a 87 f-150 351, and im wondering if there is a way to stop the valve tap without having to put lifters pushrods and rockers in? there not that expensive, like 160 dollars without gaskets so probly like 180 total, but i dont have that kinda cash flow right now, what if i were to try like a push rod and new rocker? or do they make shims i can buy to shim the valve stem somehow? any help would be great, thanks, jeremy.

You have a ford, most of them tap Not sure about shims though.
One time I had a really weird noise, in addition to the normal valve tap I've had for years, while pulling into a junkyard. My sidekick said he knew right away what it was - bent pushrod.
*shrug*
$4 later, I had a used pushrod and a used rocker, and that noise went away.
Though the tap continues... maybe I should have bought more than one
With hydraulic lifters, you should not have a "tap". Pull the valve covers off and check for broken rocker arms, rocker arm bolts that have backed out or a bent push rod. Worst case would be a collapsed lifter which should be easy to find, harder to replace...
well i noticed when i did valve cover gaskets that you could turn a rocker a slight amount, mut didnt think much of it, could this be the problem? but im putting whatever that is on hold for right now, i got to do a cam chain cover gasket, its leaking COOLANT so ive got the radiator cap loose and im gonna go pick up the parts soon.

Are you sure it's not an exhaust leak? Those usually only show up under load, whereas valvetrain clearance is usually worst at low rpms, sometimes disappearing at higher rpms.
