Question Any Ideas?

Factory tow package different?
My `92 F150 as far as I know did not come with a factory tow package . I put the hitch on (class 3-4 reese) ,along with an electric brake controller. The configuration with 302 , E4OD , 3.55 LS rears which is what this truck has , shows a maximum of 11500 pounds GCWR in the owner manual. I know what the GCWR , GAWR , GVWR mean, I need to know If the truck came factory with the 5 leafs , or is this an aftermarket addon? I have seen F150`s with only 3 leafs with no tow package , and 5 leafs with. My truck has 5. It tows our 4000# TT fine, braking is not "scary" and holds the road well with the equalizer hitch and sway control. We are looking to get a bigger trailer.

- Total weight of truck and trailer with me in it is 8970# .
- The , tongue weight is 355#.
- The GVWR of the truck is 6250#.
- Truck alone is 4800#.
I figure max trailer weight of 6500#, not a fifth wheel , due to the pin weight.

Are the stats for this truck good for what I see in the owner manual for towing?

Thanks to all who reply.

Your numbers all add up. 6500 lbs max trailer would keep you under the GCWR. If that is the GCWR of your truck as equipped, then I don't see a problem with your setup, especially since your trailer only appears to weigh 4200 lbs, from the numbers you posted. 4200 is not that heavy a trailer.

With the 302 and 3.55 gears and a 1/2 ton truck, you probably want to keep the trailer wieght under 5000 lbs for ease of towing if you are towing in hilly terrain, even though the GCWR allows you to go higher.

I do find it interesting that your F150 with 302/3.55 has the same GCWR as my F350 with 351/3.55 of the same year.... That doesn't make any sense to me. (I have since changed to 4.56 gears for more pulling power and am happy with the change).

I'm not sure I understand why you need to know if your truck came with 3 or 5 leaves from the factory. It would be nice to know, but it doesn't seem significant to your situation. Your GVWR and rear GAWR for the truck are stated, so as long as someone didn't swap in weaker springs (unlikely) and the suspension is handling the weight ok, you're fine.

Same as F350?

Checked the owner manual again , says :
Trailer Towing table:
F150 SUPERCAB
4x2 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:
ENGINE: 5.0 LITRE (302)
REAR AXLE RATIO: 3.55
MAXIMUM GCWR : 11500#
TRAILER WEIGHT RANGE: 0-7000#

I too find it odd that the GCWR is the same as your F350.
Thing is , you can easily tow a fifth wheel with the pin weight , and I can`t , axle and GVWR would be exceeded.
I was concerned as to whether or not I needed helper springs If I went with a small fifth wheel , but fiver is out now, looking for a bigger TT.

Thank you for the reply!
