tranny type?

Well, I called a local transmission shop today to ask what it would cost to get my tranny rebuilt....$1500!!! OUCH, so I'm in the market either for a reman or a good used one. How do I figure out which tranny I have in my 96 Ranger XL 3.0L 4x4. Oh and it's an automatic. I've seen some remanufactured ones on ebay for around $650...thats a good deal right? But I gotta figure out which tranny I have to see if the cost will be the same on my particular make. The problem I'm having is it slips when going from park to drive, otherwise it seems to be doing fine. I'm also loosing some fluid, but can't seem to isolate the leak, i'm guessing front main seal but really not sure on that. Do these tranny's have filters? Does maybe it just need to be serviced? Any money saving tips would be greatly appreciated.

Remember, you generally get what you pay for. $1500 is the going rate for a proper rebuild.

I would guess its some variation on the A4LD. If you don't get a definate answer here you could try asking on our tranny forum or contacting a company that sells rebuilt trannies and see what they tell you is in there.

There should be a metal tag on the extension housing with the numbers. I think I would change the fluid and filter before replacing the transmission. That might even stop the leak. There are some tech notes on this forum on how to do it. Also, a can of Sea Foam may work wonders. Also, the fluid level is pretty important. If it is low or high, it can cause the problems you describe.

the purpose of changing the fluid is to doso on a regular basis and is to prevent slipage and other issues. as for the type I am sure that any local ford dealer can run the VIN "number on bottom drivers side dashboard" and tell you what ya got as far as the tranny goes
