I just got my truck and I hate the dome light switch. It doesn't have an OFF position. I don't want the light to come on when the doors are opened. I would like to re-wire it to be a 3 position switch (OFF, DOORS, ON). Does anyone know how to accomplish this?

It wouldn't be too difficult. I haven't sat down to draw out the wiring but I think you would need a single pole, single throw switch rated for 12 vdc and wire it in series with the power to the dome light. When the switch is on, it will work like it does now. With the switch off, the light will not come on, doors open or closed. With the switch on, doors closed, the factory dome light switch will operate. That would be the easiest. If you want to do something else let me know. I'll put on the thinking cap. The hardest part is finding a "sanitary" place to locate the switch.

I think you do have an on switch. Normally it is part of the dimmer for the instrument lights. Not sure about your truck, but my 95 Ranger has a small wheel located next to the headlight switch to dim the lights. If you roll it past the detent, the dome light comes on. I would like to know if you have something similar. Thanks.
Thanks for the info, hreed. You are right about the dimmer switch. I have the same wheel located beside light switch. I don't care if that still works the same. I just want the switch on the dome light changed.

hreed's evaluation is correct.
...IF that is what you are inquiring about.
Also see post regarding "on" switch feature of instrument lights dimmer. On at least some models, this also activates the cargo light, I believe.
I would also like the flexibility of an "off" switch, but since my dome light doesn't work about one-half of the time, I guess it's pointless.
