First of all let me say that I have found this forum very useful already even though I have not posted anything.
I own a 2004 Ford Expedition, and I am going to be installing headers. Is there specific instructions for removing the stock exhaust manifolds. Or does someone have the service manual instructions.
Also, I am looking at the stereo system, and was wandering if anyone had the wiring diagram for the connection between the navigation head unit and the cd changer.
Hey T, welcome aboard. Headers are a royal PITA to install on these vehicles. Most agree that the very modest performance gains are not nearly worth the misery (or cost) of the install. That said, I don't think there is any specific protocol or procedure. You'll need a good assortment of tools, jack, jackstands, etc. and, from what I've heard, about 6-8 hours of time.
Thanks for the information Buzzard. Is there just a lot of stuff in the way or is just cramped. I am assumming that having it on a lift would make the job quicker? I have not looked under there yet so any comments are welcome.
I cannot find any...well, I haven't looked all that hard, though.
Oh, my recommendation is to soak the header bolts with your favorite Weasel **** (any bolt penetrater) for 2-3 hours prior. Even if you got such a new truck.
I'd also advise wrapping the new headers in header tape, or devising some other form of heat protection. As close as all of the components in the engine bay are (and all of the nice wiring and plastic above and around the manifolds), with all the heat headers tend to give off, I'd be concerned.
And just a friendly note: titling your post with something other than "questions" will help others give you information you need, and will help future posters search for answers to their questions. Maybe make one post for the headers titled "Manifold removal on 2004 Expy 5.4" and a separate one for the stereo...

Dean, I've heard from a lot of serious muscle car freaks that wrapping headers is a very bad idea inasmuch as all the wrapping does is trap the heat inside and prevent air from circulating around the hot metal. They say this acutally creates more heat (and headaches) under the hood. Some guys have mentioned that they even glow red hot when wrapped.
I don't think we have to worry about this with the direct fit aftermarket headers for these trucks since they bolt to the existing piping. Hence, they shouldn't differ much (size wise) from the stock manifolds.
