Assuming the transmission is functioning properly otherwise:
The problem is likely to be either the switch itself or the wiring in the steering column- especially if you have tilt. Neither of these issues requires you to go to a transmission shop.

oh I know you may have already have checked this out. Crawl around under the Tranny an check the little connector plug in the wiring for the OD. it comes out of the tranny then clips to the body frame work then up to the inside of the cab. This quick connect corrodes,gets caked with dirt...or just vibrates loose. That is what happend to me..!
