Overdrive?

Will a '98 f150 4.6 with tow package (3.55, posi) tow a (v nose 19' trailer 6'6" high) approximately 5000lbs gross safely in overdrive ? I keep my speed around 60mph. Thanks.

The usual recommendation is that if your tranny hunts, ie shifts gears a lot, then shift down.

With your combo, I suspect you wil be driving more often in 3rd especially if you get into any hilly terrain. With my 250 with 460 and 4.10, towing 8,000#etc, I usually can keep in OD on flats and small hills. But if I expect to get into hilly terrain or see a long hill ahead, I will usually drop into 3rd before I get to the hill so I can maintain speed and not bog down in the hill. If you bog down you may not be able to regain speed, so in my opinion it is better to keep the speed up, maybe even increase a little, so that the engine doesn't bog. On the 460, the engine likes to stay between 2,000 and 3,500 or so. If I get to low or too high I loose power and the gearing is such that it is hard to get back in the "sweet" power band. Yours is probably different.
