Hey, I just drive the thing. Can't be held accountable for all these technical things. Just went to the dealer, pulled out the check book, and said "give me one of them big trucks." It is really a Superduty, F-250, 4X4, Lariat, 2000 model, V-10, short bed. Got it for towing a trailer and hauling the family. It has enough room for the extra large bag of pork rinds and a big gulp. I have had no problems with steering whilst pressing the brake pedal. Either in two wheel drive or four. On a side note, I don't have the same problems with the little mirrors (the convex ones)either. I tend to just turn my head and look where I want to go. That way I don't hit anything. However, the cup holders are poor, and since the wife started doing dip, we don't need that stupid cigarette lighter sticking out of the middle of the dash where little Lleroy keeps banging his noggin on it.
I just took my 2000 F-250 v-10 supercab fwd to the dealer (Pacific Coast Ford, Federal Way, WA.) with the steering problem and a flicker in the dash lights......well golly gee Wally, they can't find any problem with anything! It is painfully obvious they are morons! I get the truck home and low and behold the F@%$&*g thing will not turn and the dash lights are flickering. They did put in the Line-X bed liner and as a added bonus they scratched the hell out of my tailgate. Not too bad for a NEW truck with 1500 miles on it huh? ....so now it is back to the dealer to deal with the fools that need a clue. Please tell me I did not make a mistake buying a ford product, as so far I am not impressed.
You did not make a mistake with buying a Ford. Dealer service does vary greatly between dealerships. There are good dealers out there.
The next time you bring the truck in, be sure to express your disappointment of the quality of liner install and flickering lights. I would even ask to speak to the service manager since this is your 2nd visit for the same problem.
Flame shields up:
As far as the 'steering problem', it doesn't appear that even Ford Motor Company itself recognizes that this is an issue. It doesn't seem to be that big of an issue anyway, more of an inconvience to very few folks. It doesn't appear that many folks even have the problem..
It's unlikely that the dealer will be able to resolve this issue.
Shields down.
I am still waiting to hear about what Ford is going to do about the braking and steering. Now do any of you 4x4 owners have a problem with turning hard to the right or left. For instance I was coming down the road and made a somewhat hard right turn into a parking lot. I heard a thumping or popping in the frontend. Then the other day I was went to pull into a parking spot at the MVD, this time I turned left and heard the same noise. I called Ford about this problem, of course they didn't have a clue. Still waiting for them to call me back. Anybody else try this let us know so we can tell Ford of this latest "characteristic".
In reply of MZCHE message, I too have had a problem when making a turn to the left, a clucking sound. Called dealership they told me to keep it in auto not lock. I'd call another time and one of the advisors told me that having it in the lock position is 2wd drive, found out that is not true. I wish ford would get people in those positions that knew what they were talking about. Did have to take it back for the drivers side hub to be replaced, it was cracked, so much for quality #1.
I to have a clunk in the front end when turning or going over large bumps. I have it on both sides. It has been in twice for this and they can't figure it out because it only does it when moving and its hard to get someone to ride under the truck to look. I saw a posting in anoter part of this message board where a guy had this problem and it was broken spot welds on the cab mounts that were poping. I'm going to tell them this next time I take it in. I also have a whine from the dash or engine compartment especially when its cold that goes away when the cluch is pushed in. they can't figure it out either.
In December 1999, Ford put out TSB #99-25-8 on this problem (increased steering effort during braking) Basically it says it is due to contamination of the hydroboost system. The fix is to install a temporary filter in the power steering line to try to clean the fluid; if it doesn't work, then replace the hydroboost unit and /or the power steering pump; all under the normal warranty.
This hydroboost system is on all diesel SD's and gasoline F-450 and F-550, only. The power steering pump supplies pressurized fluid to both the steering gear and the hydroboost unit for the brakes.
Autotech you are on the wrong theory. This is a problem with steering loss at a stand still while standing on the brakes. All Superduties have this problem from F250 up.If it was hydroboost problem(contaminated fluid) there would most likely be a brake pressure problem. If you try turning while on the brakes in the ice or loose dirt the problem goes away.
I have a clunk in my front end but it happens when I first start to move. (usually backwards out of the driveway) It only happens once in a while (not every day)and after it does it it won't do it the rest of the day. Very annoying!
Well i now have almost 8000 miles on my y2k super duty, till now i havent had a bit of problems.. After my daily reading on this site a few days ago i got in my truck slammed the brake petal as hard as i could and my steering locks up too, it seems i dont even have to really have to push the brake petal that hard for it to lock up, this is strange, has anybody got this fixed? my dealer skyline ford in dallas seems to be kinda dumb at times, i havent talked to them about it yet but its on my agenda in the very near future. on my last truck i had a 2inch suspension lift and i had it in for warranty work on the tranny and they refused to work on it due to way to many modifications according to the service manager, i let it slide since i had the new superduty on order, little did he know the owner is a great customer of mine, so rest assured guys i will have an answer ( be it good or bad) very soon........!

When there are 15-20 people complaining about a "steering problem" its difficult to determine what everybody is talking about. In my readings, it seems to me that the problem symptom here is difficult steering during braking, at standstill or very slow speeds. Some people use the words binding or lockup, but what they really may mean is no or very little power assist.
I mentioned that Ford recognized this real problem and issued a TSB to correct it. It was for the hydroboost vehicles only. Now if there is another or similar problem on non-hydroboost vehicles, F250 gasoline, etc, then there is another problem in addition to the one addressed in Ford's TSB.
You are correct though, in that the contamination can and does affect the power assist for braking, as some of our customers have told us. In fact they mentioned it can occur at other than very slow vehicle speeds, when the engine speed is low. That's because the pump output is related to engine speed not vehicle speed.
I now have my 2000 f350 cc lb dsl lariat and have done the test and have the same result. brake system is hydraulicaly assisted and is using the same pump as the steering system. therefore when you are applying the brakes a little harder than normal naturally most of the pressure is sent to the brakes and steering is restricted. I also notice this when backing our of my driveway and as I am rolling back, as the vehicle slows I shift into drive as I am turning the wheel. I realize that as I go into drive the rpm's drop and the steering lock's up then also. I wonder if raising the rpm's a little helps with this situation. if so maybe the fix could be changing the pully (and belt) to the pump raising pump pressure. I have the optional idle control and will try this or someone could step on the gas while on the brakes. I say this because when I get in the truck I will not remember.
I just ordered my F250 V10 4x4 last month. After reading so many posts on this steering problem when braking hard, I'm cautiously optimistic that I might have the same problem when I get my truck in 4 to 6 months.
It seems to me that this problem is wide spread enough that Ford should take notice if they haven't already. Based on others postings, it sounds like there's a real serious safety isssue with this problem. If I understand the problem correctly, I could see a potential problem if your driving along, foot off the gas (RPM's low) and need to brake hard and steer around something.
If Ford doesn't take notice, maybe some e-mail to the proper goverment agency would put some pressure on Ford. The National Transportation Safety Commission (if I got it right) would probably be a good place to start.
I have been experiencing the same steering problems with my 2000 F250 4x4. After taking it back to the dealer the second time, they replaced the power steering pump, inter-connecting tire rod ends, and gear box. I am currently still unable to turn the wheel while stopped, parked, or idling. This problem is extremely dangerous considering I pull a 15,0000 pound trailer. Have you had any luck with Ford acknowledging this problem or been able to have it fixed?
