Could be that the basic idle setting is too low. There was a comment about that in a thread about 4 weeks ago. In that case, they just increased the idle speed and all was OK.
Having the AC on causes a higher idle RPM to be commanded, to compensate for the 'drag' of the compressor. Since it seems to run OK w/ AC on, the computer is calling for a higher idle and bringing it up to where the engine seems smooth.
Give it a shot before anything else...nothing to lose! -Don
