Car hauler trailer

I want one. However, many new ones are being tagged well over $1500. Why high prices, I don't get.

So I'm being forced to make my own. I know some people have fabricated their own car hauler trailer. I've heard of using a motorhome chassis, an old U-hual body chassis, or start from scratch.

There is a guy who wants to get rid of an 1978 Ford "M" truck chassis measuring at 28". Is this suitable for making into a car hauler trailer?

Is there 'kits' to make my own car hauler trailer? I remembered seeing a couple somewhere, it was pretty cheap.

Car hauler trailer

I built my owen back a few years ago. I used 2 hitchs that came off duble wide trailers. For the most part it was not that hard to build and it was a realy great trialer. Towed like a dream however since I am known for over doing everything it was a little on the heavy side. In PA all I had to do is take 3 pic's of the trailer to the state and have the trailer inspected to get it legal. I would do it again if I find my self in need of a trailer.

$1,500 is expensive? My friend had to pay over $7,000 for a car trailer, and it didn't even come with a winch. Man, we're gettin raped in hawaii.

Must've been the pontoons that drove the price up - or maybe the twin merc's...

All items must be stowed under the seat in front of you or in the overhead compartment. Thank you.

LOL, The island isn't THAT small. We still have to move vehicles around. Can't just drag them down the road.

You have roads now?

Dang I got to visit Hawaii one of these days.

$1,500 is a very fair price for a trailer, you may have over that in time and material when your done building your own.

I gave a little more then 8500 for my 24', inclosed, carry all trailer and 3000 for my uncovered 24' day trailer. Niether of them have winches or generaters, just brakes on both axels. If you can find a new, dual axel, 6000lb rated trailer for 1500 I would say BUY!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Jun-02 AT 06:03 PM (EST)]Okay, I see this has wandered off topic.

I'm surprised $1500 is dirt cheap. I don't know who makes them, but it sure is nice.

It is a 16x8 dual axle trailer. It uses a 2" hitch. Tires are 14 inches. Steel construction with plywood floors. The last 4" is dovetailed. It comes with ramps, and the header is accomdated to fit a winch and a flip-top box which are extra from factory. It measure 80 inches wide, which means a full size Ford truck can fit in with a few inches to spare. I'm not sure if it inculdes brakes or not.

So I should buy this for $1500? I think a 10,000lbs winch and the flip-top box would cost $2200 or something like that.

If this trailer doesn't have brakes, how do you plan on stopping it and the car/truck that is on it.
Do not buy a trailer without brakes, your just asking for trouble.
I recently heard that brakes are required on both axles of car trailers.
By the way do you know what the axles are rated at.
I looked at one last Saturday at a swap meet the price was $1300.00 only after looking under it did i find it had no brakes on any axle.

Sounds to me like a low ball trailer. I wouldn't put a pickup on a trailer that had 14 in. wheels on it and a plywood floor. You are asking for trouble. You need 15 in. wheels and 16s would be better, with two 5000 lb.(at least) axles that have brakes on them. Go ahead a get a good trailer, you'll never regret it. Always buy heavy duty.
