I've been reading the posts here about shuttering caused by a bad torque converter. My 96 2wd is shuttering at about 40 mph just as it shifts into overdrive. Two questions: Does it hurt anything to hit the OD button to keep it in the lower gear? And is there any fluid leaking associated with a bad torque converter. I found two little (nickel sized) spots on the garage floor, smelled like tranny fluid. Thanks for the help.
Shifting to 3rd may help since I think(but not sure) that 3rd doesn't use the lock up clutch or at least the clutch has less load on it.
It is possible that you might get leaks, since shudder causes the fluid to overheat which causes seals to harden and then leak.
Some people have been able to fix shudder at least temporarily by doing a complete fluid change(tranny, torque converter and cooler). The long term fix is probably a rebuild and TC replacement.
The shudder is a problem that is common in Fords when the ATF is bad. I was having the same problem in my Expedition. It would shudder as the transmission would shift. I drained the pan and torque converter, changed the filter, and filled it w/Mobil 1 ATF. Problem solved, NO MORE SHUDDER. Now, in a '92 you might not want to put full synthetic in your transmission, but new fluid in general should resolve the problem.
The leaks could be a coincidence too. Clean the housing and check the tranny to try to find the source. You didn't say how many miles are on your truck, so it could be a seal that needs replacement.
As noted, change the fluid/filter and be sure to drain the TC as well. While you're at it, you can also use a pressurized flush for the cooler and lines. I usually get my stuff from bulkpart.com and they carry a can of flush that takes all of 5 minutes to do. Very easy and it ensures that you are starting with clean lines as well. Synthetic fluid is good, but not really necessary whe you refill.
While the pan is off, check to see that the valve body bolts are tightened to spec - I think it's about 45 in/lbs, but don't quote me on that. Loose bolts can also contribute to the stutter.
