have a 93 aerostar with 200000 miles that I replaced the radiator on. turns out the transmission coolant lines were defective and I ended up with mix of coolant and transmission fluid in the engine and transmission. found out by accident when a heater hose blew. replaced radiator with new again and flushed out what I could in the engine. also undid tran coolant line and flushed out tranny. ran ok for a while but then started a slow transmission leak now has gotten worse and just flows out of top of transmission. is there a valve or vent up top that it could be coming out?
I am in process of draining transmission and changing filter. any other ideas of what to check or replace or find leak? I am assuming coolant mixture damaged seals, gaskets, etc.
If coolant got into your tranny then you are most likely screwed. The ethylene glycol in the mix has a real bad habit of eating the lining off the bands in the transmission. They may appear to be fine now but probably wont last too long. Hate to be a downer, but sounds like a tranny rebuild is in your not so distant future.
Is a transmission rebuild something I could do? I have done most everything else using a book: radiator replacement, plugs, brakes, caliber, rotor, heater cores, etc. I see AutoZone has a rebuild kit listed for about $150. Would that contain what I needed?
i would keep flushing tranny fluid a few times. the fluid is cheep. remember that about have the fluid stays in the tork converter so the only way to get good fluid in there is to keep changing it. you could go to a place that has the flush system were they hook onto your cooler line and flush completly until you have good fluid. cost about 90 bucks though, tranny rebiulding is not so easy if you have never done it. one little check ball or spring not put back correctly will make something fail or not work correctly.
its alot of trouble to r and r it too. buying a rebuilt and installing it yourself can be a problem also because your stuck with the r and r if there is a problem. my freind did it three times before it was right. your better off to find a shop to do the whole job at a resonalble price.
