I want to change the engine and tranny in my truck. cant make up my mind to stay big block or small block. i have a 360 w/ 3 on the tree and want to go auto. my truck is a '66 swb and have no intention to haul or tow with it it is strickly a toy cause my '79 lwb will do all the work. money is always an issue but can wait for the right setup. just want to go fast and show my oldest son that 4 cylinders are just that half an engine... thxs
Well i would go with a 390 if i were you, my built 390 gets about 13 MPG. About .52 lift on the cam, edelbrock 750 and edelbrock intake, headers, 9.5:1 Comp., high volume oil pump. Nothing that fancy, but it will turn them 38's pretty good. You can look at 400 HP with a cam, intake, carb, headers, and decent comp. Not too bad for the amount of money which you have to put into the engine. A c6 would be a fail proof tranny behind that FE.
I like it show my oldest son...lol I say go BigBlock for more power of course you can hop a 302 to be plenty fast but i love the big blocks and what you can and some time dont need to do to them........If your gona make a toy build it right i'd say...(oldest son...) ricers
i would also say stay with a big block, i would upgrade it to a 390, i wouldnt go small block cuz that means changing motor mounts, etc..... atleast a 390 will bolt right in and go like hell. you can convert your 360 into a 390 with a 390 crank rods and pistons, and find a C6 and you will be good to go.

i thought i would die the first time my son told me that a stock honda would beat me........lmao i have turned 6200 rpm in my 360 and doing so i put a nice knot on the back of his head with the rear window. not enough though and will give thought to the 390 can you stroke a 390 ???? just want chebbies and kids in the rear view.....thx for the input.
yes you can take a 428 crank and put it in a 360/390 block, or SCAT makes stroker cranks for the FE, check out www.dscmotorsport.com they have 428 cranks and stroker cranks, but i guarantee you wont pick up a stroker crank very cheap, if your going to do the crank, theres always rods, pistons, cam, intake manifold, carb, valve train, heads to deal with also, but i guess if your going to do it, do it right.
The stroker cranks aren't all that expensive ,about $500 on Ebay occasionally for SCAT 4.125" or 4.25" strokes. The expensive part is getting the rods and custom pistons.
you can get a full rotating assembly to to stroke a 360/390 to 430 cubes for around $2000. It does wonders for the torque curve,
that is not out of the budget i have been expecting between 3 to 4 k on t the motor it is a life long project and to be able to let it rip is just too much to go cheap on i think i will be looking for a donor vehicle and i will let you know how it goes.... thx for all the input.
