Question oil pressure

i am new to the diesel motor. my question is how long does it take for the oil pressure gauge to come up to show pressure on a cold start. mine seems to take several seconds to show any pressure is this normal. i have used the block heater and still took a while for the oil pressure to show on the gauge.

Could be a "slow" sending unit, you might think about taking it in...if you are worried.

First, welcome to FTE!!!!

I don't know if you have seen it or not on FTE, the oil pressure gauges on the newer Fords are "idiot light" type of gauges.
The oil pressure sending unit is a "normally open" switch that
closes with about 7PSI of oil pressure. The gauge will then read
about 1/2 scale, and will not show fluctuations in oil pressure.

Our check guage light will stay on for a second or two then the needle moves and all is well. We are in the single digits to 20s now.

An aftermarket oil pressure gage would help

Is there a tech that will validate this. I asked that question over on the http://flatratetech.com/6literpowers...ultimatebb.cgi forum and they said the gauges were analog.

The Power Stroke Manual here at FTE explains much about the PSD including the oil pressure gage and sending unit,

https://www.ford-trucks.com/framered...n/ps60_manual/

The gage registers normal above 7psi. Not enough oil pressure for me.

Yes, the guage itself is analog. Unfortunately the sending unit is a switch. So they were not technically wrong, just didn't spill all the beans.

PS, still say you could make these work like the older guages, with a "real" sending unit. Oh well, might just as well buy a "real" guage to go along with it!

would you have the P/N of the sender? Are you sure it is compatible?

There is proably no way to calibrate the gage.

I have the parts to install a Auto Meter mechanical gage. I will take photos and post hopefully tomorrow.
