vacuum question

First off, 88 f150 300 - I am overhauling much of the engine and associated parts. When it comes to vacuum lines I have a question that I hope someone may be able to answer. Some of the original vacuum lines (w/ 195000k) are still here. They seem to have hardened up and I have found some that are cracked. I was planning on replacing all of the vacuum lines. My question is: do I have to use the exact same size line that was used in a specific spot for replacement or can I just assume that if it fits on the part that it is ok. I dont know if the inside diameter is important to the functioning of a specific part.

Thanks for any help

It it fits on the part with a tight connection, it'll be OK. Try to get close to what you have (ie, just don't replace a 3/8" I.D. line with a 1/8" line with adapters on each end) but it's not real critical. Don't jump thru hoola hoops to get a perfect match. Length isn't real critical, either. Just don't replace a 1 foot long piece with a 40 foot piece. Significant changes in hose volume, in certain instances, can affect engine response times ... like with the hose going to the MAP sensor. Keep the diameters and lengths reasonably close to the originals and you'll be OK.
