Hi, I got a 1990 XLT Bronco and just tonight I blew my pinion gear in the rear. I belive i got the 4.10 gears, my uncle has a 1985 Bronco that had the inline six in it and i've been looking all over the net to find out if the 85' has the same gears as the 90'. So my question to you is will the two rear ends match? I don't want to go through the trouble of replacing my pinion gear, and i might as well replace the ring gear just in case. It would be nice to have the Ford Nine inch or a Dana 60 but that means different bolt patters, but my options are pretty much open. Please reply thanks
most broncos came stock with 3.55 gears. unless yours is a special order it wont have the 4.10. the 9 inch has same bolt pattern as the 8.8. its the d60 that uses an 8 lug bolt pattern.
Well how hard is it to change the Ring and Pinion gears in the front and Rear, i had my goal set on using my uncles truck axle but theres just so much conflicting info that i might as well just change front and rear gears to be safe.
If you've never done it before, don't know how, and don't have the special tools to do it, you're better off taking to a shop specializing in axle work and have them do it. A speed shop or 4x4 shop may be able to do it or point you to a shop that can.
You can ruin a brand new set of expensive gears if you don't get them lined up right. Also, it is not a good idea to change just the pinion and not the ring gear, they are changed as a set because of wear/mesh issues.
If you change the ratio in the rear, you must also change it in the front if you want to use 4wd.
yea I'm just going to pull the ring and pinion and take it some wher, to get ones that are the same and put them in, it will be a good learning experience for me. I'll have someone hopefully that my dad knows, that does 4x4 work and have him help. Not to mention my friends know a little bit too. But i think they are just as inexperienced as myslef.
