Hi all - I just bought a used 03 Supercrew. Other than the gas mileage (which I knew would be bad) I love it. I am quite sure I drive it less hard than the previous owner, so I'm wondering if I should disconnect the battery for a while to empty the memory on the automatic transmission. Any reason I wouldn't? It shifts a little hard into 2nd gear. Other than radio stations, is there anything else it will clear out?
on an unrelated note, I've never owned a part-time 4 wheel drive vehicle before. What is the status quo on using it on a "regular basis" just to keep all the parts moving around and in working order? I know you don't use it on dry pavement...do you need to engage it every few weeks for a mile or two on straightaways where it won't stress the parts as much...what's best? I imagine it won't see any regular use until next winter at this point.
The PCM should adjust to the new driving habits without having to disconnect the battery, but you can do that too. Maybe the previous owner had a shift kit installed or reprogrammed the shift points? It should be a pretty smooth shift unless you really hit the gas.
A shift kit involves changing some parts in the transmission to make it shift "harder" (more noticeble positive shift). Reprogaming the shift points involves changing the computer side to give the same effect, harder shifts. That can be done with a Hypertech, Diablo, ect. programmer. The reason to do this is for performance gains when towing or to hear the tires break free during that hard 2nd shift
I'm not saying that is what is going on with your truck, just something to consider. Good luck
I engage my 4x4 and 4x4LOW, once a month just to keep the solenoids and things moving. This will help to keep things freed up incase you really need it one day
