I had the cruise control set for 50 mph, and without disabling it I hit the gas pedal to speed up to pass another vehicle. Instead of speeding up, it felt like the truck was fighting the acceleration. I had to floor the accelerator to speed up, but the truck was shuddering like the cruise control was fighting against increasing the speed. When I disabled the cruise control then hit the gas pedal, the truck accelerated with it's usual pep.
Has anyone else experienced this? I know if I hit the brake it disables the cruise control, but it's a bit of a pain to have to disable cruise control first to speed up.
I have used the speed control on several occasions but have never had the trouble you're talking about.
The only thing I have noticed is that you need to watch your speed going down hills with it engaged - there's no engine braking. I've set cruise at 75 and then noticed I'm doing 85.
I thought engine breaking was one of the features of the '04 F150? In fact, that's what I thought it was doing when I tried to manually accelerate with the cruise control on.
Pressing and holding the "accel/set" button will speed you up, but not quick enough to do a pass. I usually just tap the brakes, pass the car, then hit resume and I'm back to the set speed. If you press "off" you won't be able to resume.
In my ranger I don't have to tap the brakes first. I just hit the gas pedal, go around, and take my foot off the gas, letting the truck coast back down to the cruise control speed.
Although it's easy enough to learn to tap the brakes first, I was just wondering if the truck's cruise control wasn't working correctly and if anyone else has experienced what I described.
This may have something to do with the speed you were travelling. I believe there is a minimum speed at which the cruize will operate. I think it's 45mph but I'm not sure. Try it at higher speeds and see what happens.-Jack.
Minimum speed for cruise to work is 35, according to the owner's manual. I'll get it out on the freeway and try the same thing when I'm at 65. Thanks for the suggestion.
Havent noticed any problem with accelerating with cruise on, but havent actually kicked it in the but yet. Note* The 04 F150 3V engine does'nt have any throttle cables or a cruise servo. It uses an electric motor to actuate the throttle plate. IE Drive by Wire. The gas pedal is spring loaded to give you throttle feel. Look under the dash at the pedal assy, its electricaly operated. The processor tells the throttle body how far to open. Accelerating with cruise on shouldnt be any different than usual. Gonna check out WOT in the morning on way to work with cruise on.

I meant to mention that with the cruise on, the pedal returns to rest (full up position) if you accel with the cruise button the pedal does'nt move. When you accell with the pedal, you have to press it far enough untill it reaches the stage that it finally overcomes the set throttle position then it should pick up and start accellerating. That may be the lag or fighting to accel that you were talking about. I hope this info helps
Hey, I didn't realize that! It could be the problem, and what thought was the engine (or transmission) fighting my attempt to speed up could just be the fact that when I put my foot back on the gas pedal I'm feeling the road transmitted through the pedal, and until I get it past the set throttle position it won't speed up.
Thanks a lot for the post. I think you nailed it! I never noticed the pedal return to the "full up" position when putting it in cruise. By the way, how did you notice that???
I'm a Lincoln/Mercury technician and we have that setup on the Lincoln LS, so i'm kinda used to it from test driving all the time. Just bought the F150 two weeks ago and went on 200 mile trip this weekend and got a pretty good feel of the system. The pedal assy is not motorized its spring loaded. Had one out of an LS a couple weeks ago and was able to check it out.
Well Dusty1. I did a couple WOT runs with the cruise on. The throttle reacted the way it is supposed to, No lag, just giddy up and go. Hope yours worked correctly as well.
Thanks for checking. It's raining here in VA, so I drove the Ranger to work. Can't bring myself to drive the newly-polished Lariat in the rain. I know, I know--it's a truck. To me it's a gem, and it's polished right now!
I have also noticed a change in throttle behavior when the cruise control is engaged... that's what drew me to your post. Last week while driving out of town I set the cruise at 35 just playing around. When I got to the edge of town I went ahead and accelerated using the foot pedal with the cruise still on. My truck exhibited an unusual increase in pep. I thought this was pretty cool so I set the cruise to 55 and tried it again. This time I experienced the opposite. I turned off the cruise and had normal power again. Not a big deal, but I had never noticed this behavior before and haven't really thought about it since... until your post.
