I have a 75 F-250 with a 390 and its starting to wear on my nerves. Here is my problems first it seems to start hard when the engine is warm I just have to crank on it a little longer than I would like, just about every 390 i have had has experinced this problem, and second, the float valve keeps sticking open in the carb resulting in the engine flooding, this is a brand new edelbrock 600 carb. This motor has less than 10,000 miles and I did the rebuild myself so when this stuff happens it is extreamly frustrating. Any Sugestions. thanks
Since you are familiar with the engine, then it can't be the starter. I have never experienced that with any of my FE's, but I have with a 351W. The teeth was bad (worn and warped) on the flywheel. I guess it happened when the previous owner had it rebuilt. I put 4 starters on the thing before I figured it out.
Can't help on the carb - But, I would take it back and get another just in case.
Does it start good when cold? When warm, does flooring the gas pedal make it start faster? (this would indicate it's flooded) Does it act flooded when you are driving?
My 390 had problems with purculation - gas boiling in carb and causing flooding. It happened with the stock 2 barrel and with my Edelbrock 600cfm. I installed a 1" plastic carb spacer (with 4 seperate holes) to insulate the carb from the engine heat. It worked great. Now even on the hottest days there's no signs of purculation.
If the float is sticking open on a new carb it is either misadjusted or you have gotten some crud in there. Check the inlet valves for junk and your inline filters.
All,
There is nothing wrong with the starter. True or False? Your not getting a slow crank out of this, are you?
How do you know the carb is flooding? Can you smell the gas?
Do you know how to work on your Elderbrock? It sounds like you've got some garbagfe in the tank that's fouling the carb. Are you running a filter, good , bad or other? You did say this has happened twice on two different carbs, right?
Drop your tank and flush it out , then replace the intank filter and replace the inline filter at the carb. Then pull your carb apatr and clean it out. Or you could just try to make it from day to day.
