My friend has an axle that i wanted to put under my 85' F-150. Tha axle came out of a 72' F-250, the only thing i'm worried about are my gears, i don't know what i have and don't know what the other axle has in it. if anybody knows what are in these axles, i really need to know.
There could be a number of gear ratios in both rear ends - then you have 16" vs 15" tires that further complicate the speedometer setting. Unless they've been worked on there is a metal tag on the bolts for the inspection plate. If the tag is gone the easiest thing to do it pull the inspection plate and count the teeth on the ring gear and divide by the number of teeth on the pinion gear (hopefully you're going to change the oil anyway).
Kind of wondering why you're making this swap. You'll have the joy of carrying two differant spares and the afore mentioned welding for new perch mounts. In order to take advantage of it's additional weight rating you'll need new springs too.
