I recently bought an 88 f150 with two tanks. when I fill it up at the gas pump, it cuts off as if it is full on both tanks. I withdrew the nozzle a little and it pumped fine. Why is it cutting off with the nozzle all the way in? I want to fix it because I want it to cut off when it is full, but not when the tank is empty or every two seconds. How can I fix this?
Good luck. Over time you will learn how fast and at what position you have to have the nozzle and the truck to get gas into it. But you may want to take the filler neck loose and make sure it doesn't have any restrictions
welcome to the club, you cant fix it its a ford thing, i do belibe its due to how they run the fill line inside the vent line, instead of filling through a big hose and venting through a little one like dodge and chevy, for has you filling through a small one and venting through a large one, i usually put the nozzel all the way in and then pull it out like half way and it seems to work just dandy.
i have now it second nature to put the filler in like half way
but then again, i top off till i see the gas at the filler neck? but y not, i need all the capacity i can get.
Thanks. I'll live with it. My last vehicle project was an AMC Jeep, so obviously I can adjust to quirks in a vehicle. The Jeep just had to much "character" for me, so I came back to Ford trucks. Previously I had an 84 6.9 liter diesel F250. It only lasted over 300+K miles before it wore out. I want to get back to my 65 mustang project so I need a trustworthy truck so I can devote my free time to the mustang. Also need it for hauling off and on.
