Front end noise fixed!!!

As I've described here a couple of times, I've had an annoying front-end drive train noise for a while now. I sounded like I had badly cupped tires on the front when accelerating or decelerating. The first trip to the dealer got me new bearings in the front axle, but the problem was still there. I finally had the dealer check a TSB I found describing my problem. It had a fix for "growling noise between 40 and 70 MPH". The fix was to replace the chain in the transfer case. Problem solved.

It is an early 2002 Mountaineer 4.0 AWD with 32,000 mi. I found the TSB listed on Alldata.com with the above description.

JLINDER, The problem I had was in my transfer case. Since 2WD vehicles have no transfer case, your problem must be something else. The dealer had a tool he called "chassis ears" that let him listen to different parts of the drive train while driving. This narrowed the problem to the transfer case. My guess (if you have ruled out the tires) is that it's the wheel bearings or rear differential.
