I need help! Anyone who has any knoledge, please chime in.
I have a 99 Superduty that is still under warranty, however I am having paint problems.
I bought the truck in April of 99. In January of 2000 I began to notice that my paint appeared to be splochy. I took it to a different dealer than the one I bought it at, they agreed that the truck needed to be repainted. My fear was that the paint would never be like it is when it leaves the factory. In August of 2000, the dealer repainted the entire truck, I was under the impression that the dealer was going to strip the truck down to the bare bones and give me a paint job that I could feel comfortable with for the next 5 to 10 years. Unfortunately you all know that my worst fears were realized.
Chip after chip after chip, it seems it chipped at all the spots they taped off. I was told that they put to much hardener in the paint and that the truck needed to be repainted again.
I returned to the dealer and was told that they were simply going to sand down where they found chips and make it look great again. I argued and lost.
Three weeks later a spot that was probably chipping before I took it in the last time is chipping. It is a 1 by two inch chip and it seems to me that, since I didn't point the chip out to the body shop manager, then they didn't bother to inspect the rest of the truck for chips.
I realize my biggest mistake at this point is that I don't live anywhere near the dealer where I purchased the truck. If I did and had been having these problems with the truck, I would have just left it on the lot a long time ago.
My question is, since I have not been dealing with the dealer that sold me the truck, what do I do? This dealer has been very accomodating, but if he accomodates me with a crappy job, what is the point.
I am also having engine problems, so you can imagine my frustraition.(Piston Slap etc...)
Expert advice is preferable, but I'll take anything at this point.
Hi, it has been my experience that no matter where you have a vehicle painted, it is really difficult to match the factory paint job. Even a dealer is only as good as the guys in the shop. I would think you can call Ford customer service and see what they say about this. Sorry I cant do much more for you. Best of luck in this matter.
I had problems w/ a repaint on a 97 ford taurus. The paint started chipping really bad where they did the paint over. When I took it back they informed me they just changed to a new paint method. The bad paint was a "domestic" blend. Apparently the domestic paint doesn't adhere to the original paint, thus chipping occurres. They changed to a european blend that has a much stronger chemical bond. This keeps the rock chips at a minimum, instead of big flakes. After the new paint was applied, I had no problems. Hope this helps.
my advice is take it to a reputable independent shop and have them paint it right
I have seen a few repaints by dealers body shops that werent good at all (dirt, peeling, chiping etc) done by different manufactures. Dodge dealer even said"we dont have that kina facility" this was after dirt in paint
chevy repaint from 8 yrs ago is peeling now
ford repaint in 87 on 87 truck was unsatisfactory
I didnt have any trouble on my 99 and so far no trouble on the 00
hi, i'm no expert on paint by no means. but i had an uncle that used to paint for a dealership, like i read in someone elses reply, a dealership paint job is only as good as the man holding the paint gun. i had a 93 f-150 with flaking paint and like you i feared having it repainted bc i knew the quality wouldn't be as good as the factory job. also like you i thought the truck would be striped down and painted but it wasn't. atleast they did paint my entire truck. anways, going by my uncle and my past experiance with the 93 which was gray, never buy a gray, or silver vehicle! they soak up way to much sunlight and will always chip and flake off.
