K&N Filter Cleaning
My 2001 Super Duty received it's K&N FIPK at 4,000 miles and at 30,000 miles I cleaned the filter. The supplied cleaning kit worked like a champ and now I have a "like new" filter again. However, the biggest joy was the lack of dust in the intake system behind the filter.
Watching posts over the years, I have heard all of the talk of dust penetrating the K&N filters. This talk has left me wondering if I should reinstall the OEM filter system. Granted my truck is rarely run on unpaved roads or in extremely dusty conditions, but my filter did not let any noticable dust or grit through.

When I cleaned the filter the second time, I had read about the dust, and I did have dust in the tube. I also figured out I had overdone the "lightly oil filter" part of the cleaning. I now use the spray on K&N oil. I have not had any dust in the tube since switching.

Bordaine,
I too have read of "over oiling". To prevent this, I sparingly used the supplied squeeze bottle and ended up with almost 1/4 of the bottle left when I finished.
Since I have a backup vehicle, I didn't drive my truck for several days after the cleaning/reoiling. The day after cleaning I was amazed to see a small spot of red oil under my truck which had dripped from my filter. Although I thought I had been skimpy with the oil, I had actually used too much.
By letting it sit, gravity (and a few paper towels) have taken care of any excess oil I had applied. The several days of sitting worked in my favor.
