When I bought my 2001 F350 PSD someone told me the camper package came with dual alternators.. WRONG... So I'm wondering now, what would be involved in adding the second alternator. Looks like I need the bracket, alternator, longer belt and a second idler pulley.. not sure about the wiring though. Just curious if anyone else has done this.. Daurie
The second alternator option is for use on Ambulances,Fire equipment etc. where they have high voltage demands. I have a 2000 cc powerstroke and pull trailers with lots of lights and have no problem with one alternator. If you are having voltage problems check all your connections. Unless you need extreme amperage the single alt. will do it all!!!
Why do you want a second alt. The reason this option is available is for high voltage demand applications, such as ambulance duty where your engine is idling and you have lots of lights on:ie flashers, headlights, worklights etc.Which is where your idle controler option comes in to play. I have pulled trailers with all lights on and heater etc. and have not had any problem with stock alternator on the powerstrokes.
I believe that if you check the specks you will see the trlr tow/
camper package has dual batteries and a single 115 amp alternator, which is more than sufficient to handle anything
but ambulance/fire engine service. Good luck.
Just got the '01 SD PS...it has two alternators. Why...I have no idea and it does not have power seats. But the thing that get me is that it is mounted on the bottom of the engine. Isn't that were all the spray and slush/salt is. How long until it stops charging and also how will I know it is not operational anymore?
