Diesel charging problem

Hi all,

I just found this place and it seems to be very informative. As such, I hope maybe someone can help me out.

My ride: '89 F250 XLT Lariat 7.3L Auto 2WD Reg Cab

My problem: Driving home from trip this weekend, on highway, it stopped charging. Replaced regulator with a new one I had at home and a Reman. 100 amp Alternator. With this it is still not charging.

The old alt WAS faulty. A part inside on the back almost fell out when I pulled it out.

Is there a fuse somewhere to prevent a problem if the alt. dies?

The voltmeter reads about 10v and the dummy light is on.

Please help.

ps. nick is one my bro gave as a kid.

It is not unheard of to get bad remanufactured alt. I don't no of any protection for the alt other than fuse links, but if you lost one of those, you would have no power at all. If the system is charging correctly, you'll have around 14 volts at the battery with the truck running.

There is a fusible link in the output wire from the alternator to the point where it hooks into the system. This would prevent the alt from charging, and you would still have power, although only from the battery.

Checked it all out and here is what the prob was:

Heatsink inside alt broke and shorted against the case. This should have blown Fuse Link "J" by the starter selenoid. What happened was that this wire on the selenoid was bent and very stressed and this wire blew instead of the link.

After replacing the wire end with a solderless connector to fit on the selenoid, all is well.

Thanks for the help and input.
