My '97 Supercab with a Windsor 4.6 was
pinging and knocking horribly this weekend,
putting out a puff of white smoke when
shifting into passing gear. I was really worried,
as it was also burning an enormous amount
of oil too. I did a complete Oil and filter
change (Danny's Differential's in Tulsa put in Valvoline
with a Fram filter, against my request). I put Motorcraft
5W30 back in (6 quarts), new pcv valve, new air
filter, and used about .40 cents worth of Brakleen
to thoroughly clean the Mass Air Sensor.
I let the Brakleen dry, and took it out for a test run.
It runs great! My tire blew out during the drive,
so dropped on some 265/75R16 All Terrains
to replace the old 255/70R16.
Started it up, still runs like a champ!
I can't believe the difference it made. I thought
my engine was going out. The owner's before me didn't
take very good care of my blue buggy
I'm trying to make up for it.

'97 F150 Supercab 4.6L 127K
'99 Expedition Eddie Bauer 5.4L 85K

p.s. Keith, also keep the IAC in mind if all else fails.
Clean it or replace it. Cleaning will work for awhile,
it will eventually need to be replaced.

Oh yeh, PCV is one on the list also. Can't go wrong for like $4. Along with the fuel filter yesterday it got 6 quarts 5w-30 and a WIX oil filter. Guess I'll probably get my can of carb cleaner tomorrow and a PCV filter and try spraying that MAF again with a real corrosive, lol. Air filter looks new to me. Maybe it is just a cheapo low flow junk.

Well, I flooded the MAF with carb cleaner a few times and while it was drying changed out the PCV valve. I think the hardest part of that was getting the stupid plastic elbow that came with it onto the valve itself. My hand is all bruised from pounding it. Anyway, got all back together and went for a spin. Still pinging. Guess I'll have to wait until this weekend and try a different brand of gas.

Don't want to scare you but my 4.6 with 130,000 miles had the same symptoms. I could never figure it out or get it to stop. Last week the engine blew. I'm in the process of swapping out the engine right now. Haven't got the old one out yet so I don't know what happenend to it. Hope yours doesn't do the same.

Well, if it blows within the next month or 1500 miles the dealer isn't going to be too happy either cause it will be under the 50/50 powertrain warranty, lol. How long was yours pinging for? It's something I want to get fixed as the pinging damages the engine.

A clogged egr port in the air charge assy (the elbow behind the throttle body) will cause spark knock. Also the MAF sensor BARO reading should be at 157 megahertz Plus or Minus at sea level anything below 145 megahertz tends to cause sparkknock. You would have to check it with a diag computer to monitor this pid.

I went with a rebuilt 4.6L from Roadmaster in Texas. It is $1750 with shipping. Don't have it yet. Anybody have any experience with them? The old one started pinging about 5,000 miles ago. Lots of luck.

Was that the best deal out there on a solid rebuild?
Sounds like a good deal from your other thread.
Crated and missing no parts, I'm sure. Good luck
with installing. Please keep us posted on progress.
Jeez, my pinging is back today.
I dropped on a new set of 265/75R16's,
so it drives different, straining the engine and tranny more. I'm going after the EGR clean out next, then will look at a tune up and IAC replacement. Hope it helps.

That was the best price I could find. I looked pretty hard. Should be crated and missing no parts. We'll see.

I got a tank of Exxon in now, gonna let that burn through and see if anything clears up. Stopped at the local shop to see if they wanted to toy with it. The guy there told me to run a couple tanks of super through it so I'll try that next. If after one tank I don't notice it getting better I'm gonna have to hook myself up with some OBD equipment, lol. Do any tear down on that old motor to see if it turned the piston heads into ash trays?

Just my two cent, nobody seems to be able to beat this, not even a new motor, could it be the catalytic converter. I had one completely plug up on me, it shut the truck right down, the only way we could get it running again was to take an axe to it( we were in the bush and to lazy to walk). Who knows it may be worth checking.
