Again I have a 1999 Ford Ranger Sport. I was wondering how hard changing the timing belt is? My truck has 76k and not sure if I should change the timing belt yet? Thanks Brad
wasnt too hard to change in my '88 2.3 dont know what may have changed since then, i changed mine at 120,000 if they still make the 4 cyl like they used to, it's a non-interferance engine, which means if the belt breaks while driving you wont be poking holes in the pistons with the valves. on my '88 i removed the fan and timing belt cover, used a long thick screwdriver as a prybar to push back the tensioner (there is a "special" tool for this) slipped a new belt on and put the belt cover and fan back on. but i havent seen under the hood of a 4-cyl ranger in a long while, so your job may differ, a hanes book should have information about it. edited to add: i just noticed on your other post you had 3.0 v-6 listed, i thought you had a 4 cyl, i think all V6s except the old 2.8 and the new 4.0 o.h.c. use a timing chain. sorry, dave.
OK thanks. I may look into getting a manuel to see how difficult the job is. I know my local trust worthy mechanic usually wants around 200 bucks or so to do this work. Thanks
its pretty simple although my hynes manual for my 91 I4 was wrong on some of the steps. it is recommended that you change them every 60k miles, my truck had the original timing belt which had 230k miles on it. i definately dont recommend going that long on one since they dont make things like they use to.
