A/C compressor failed on 97 PSD

Timing is everything, and of course as the summer begins to get heated my A/C compressor goes out on my 97 PSD. It has 42,000 miles now. I rarely use it here in Colorado through the winter. I heard I should run it from time to time to avoid this failure, is this true? To late know, but for the new one. Has this been a problem for anyone else? Does anyone know where a good place to get quality used parts cheap? Finally, could this be a do it yourself repair?

Try to stay away from so called "rebuilt" compressors. Nothings worse than spending a lot of money only to do the job again.
