When going to reverse my trans acts as it has a bent fork.To get into reverse I have to slam the lever quite sharply, and sometimes must do that more than once.I can feel it when the gear fits into the place it should be. Does any one know if this is a known problem with the OD 5 spd. Mine is an F-350 with the 7.3 THANKS PHIL
Does it do this when you are trying to come from any gear or just certain ones. Or does it seem to behave differently if you come from different gears.
I've had several tranny's in various cars and trucks that have the same symptom. Same as my 00 F250 with the 5sp..
A common trick is to first shift into 1st or 2nd (keep the clutch in) then go to reverse.. By first doing this it seems to align stuff for the shift into reverse..
Works every time. After a while, it will just be a habit you do and don't even realize it..
I have to agree with the shifting to 1st prior to shifting to reverse. I have a 79 CJ5 and a 93GMC and it worked with both of them and it does become second nature. My 2000 SD CC has the automatic. Nice for in town but I still miss the shiftin
The shift to 1st-first trick has always worked with the other trucks I've had in the past-including 10 wheelers. But this problem acts differently. The lever goes all the way back, but the gear isn't all the way into mesh, it then jumps out and I have to move the shifter back to neutral and back to rev. If the gear isn't all the way in it can't even be held in with the shift lever. When it does go in, the last little bit of movement of the gear can be felt in the shift lever. That's why I believe it's either a bent fork or a worn out fork. I bought my truck with 145,000 mi. and it had been a work truck for a company that did weed control and was off road a lot with different drivers. THANKS FOR THE INPUT PHIL
I might be having the same problem. I just bought an '87 F-250 4x2 w/ 6.9l diesel and ZF 5-speed. I have no problems with the other gears, but am unable to keep in reverse. Seems like it is not able to fully engage the gear.
My local (trusted) tranny shop sez $1000 no holla, but will have to see once the case is cracked open whether more parts are required. I'm hoping someone will post the "magic bullet" for this one and save my financial future... or give me a clue how to handle it myself.
