Transmission or Transfer Case?
I have an '87 Full-Size Bronco, 4WD, with automatic transmission. Why will it go into gear in low-range 4WD, but not 4WD and 2WD. Just grinds. For a month or so, in 2WD, I had to keep a load on it (foot on gas and brake), or it would go out of gear and start grinding. Yes, I know I need to take it to the shop, but it's the weekend and I'm broke! HELP!!!

As far as I can tell, transfer case linkage is okay. I inspected it from inside the truck. Pulled back carpet and removed plate. I disassembled linkage, inspected, and reassembled. Everything's pretty tight. THANKS for your reply!

have you installed a body lift or any other type of things. it sounds as if mayby your shift linkage has stretched or is misadjusted, or maybe a plastic grommet has deteriated enough to give you your shifting problems.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but... the Xfer Case is toast.... there are two Forks inside the case. I had the same problem happen to my case.. the Range fork that holds the truck in Hi-range was toast! I had the entire case rebuilt with new 2 new forks, bearings, new chain, seals etc ---> $950 installed.. I was guessing only $700... If I known it was going to be $950 I just would have spent another $800 and gotten an Atlas II.
