Question speed sensor

94, F150 4.9L 6 cylinder Just this morning the speedometer quit working and the transmission started acting strange, such as down shifting at odd times and very slow to shift. Could this be the speed sensor. The local Advance auto guy suggested it.

Where is the speed sensor located on a 94 F150 6 cylinder?

Are you saying the rear differential? And is this easy to get to?

Yes it's ontop of the rear differential, 1 bolt will remove it, chances are it's not actually the sensor. It's a very simple design and kind of hard for it to fail. Clean the magnet off, check the wiring for corrosion. This signal from the sensor is a pulse signal, and any interuption in that signal will cause problems. Your tranny issue is from lack of a speedometer. Do a search under "bad PSOM" too..you'll find a lot of info on this topic.

I don't want to sound like I'm stepping on toes. But isn't the sensor on the rear diff. for the RABS? If so, the only thing that would happen if it was faulty is the RABS would not work and the ABS light would stay on.

According to my 93 f-series wiring diagram, the speed sensor on the differential feeds both the cluster, AND the RABS module through two wires, which is either red/pink, LTgrn/yel OR org/LTblu, LTgrn/blk at the cluster.

The light green/black (or light green/yel) wire is the ground wire, the other is the signal wire.

The wiring under the truck will be light green/black and red/pink.

Off the cluster, the gray/black wire feeds the ECM on pin 3, as well as the cruise control servo module.

We incourage this kind of comment..so don't feel shy or hesitant...

The RABS sensor was used from 87-91, and the speed sensor came off the tranny on these models. In 92 ford went to the Programable Speedometer/Odometer Module (PSOM) until 96 (and 97 superduties).

That RABS sensor for the 87-91 trucks was converted into a RABS sensor and speed sensor...and they ditched the sensor in the tranny.

Thumbs up Speed sensor success

Thanks to all that responded. The two wires coming from the Speed sensor were broken. Spliced the wire and all is working.

Speed Sensor

By the way the ABS light did come on and after splicing that light went out also.

If I had axles from a 1989 f150 would there be anyway to swap them in and still make the speedo work? Can the wires from the rear end be put into the wires from the tranny?

Basically I'd be taking '89 axles and puting them into a '94 w/m5od. Any way to do it?
