Question Edelbrock 1406

Here's the latest problem(s)

The Truck:
F150 Custom 1979
Redline 302 cid
Edelbrock 1406 600cfm Performer
4wd

The Problem:
The truck idles rough, and bucks and jumps when just cruising at a sustained speed, i.e. 35mph etc. Have checked for vacuum leaks, and as far as I can tell there aren't any.
This carb came off of a 460, and I was wondering if the metering rods and jets are the wrong size for a 302. If it is the case, then what size of jets/rods do I need? Could it be the choke. BTW, on the Edelbrock, does the choke open all the way when hot? Heard that some carbs don't open all the way unless the accelerator is depressed? I did check the float levels, and have had the carb kitted.

eidelbrock has a real good tech. site that would give the best info on the metering rods, i would look for a spark problem , possibly crossfiring in the dist. cap or plugwires shorting to ground, they could probably answer the choke question also, bob

Ok, got it solved. Everything works like a champ.

Had to clean the venturi idle ports (all plugged up with somesort of black gunk). Reset the float levels, cleaned the jets and set the timing. Had a vacuum leak on the adapter plate between the carb and the manifold. Replaced that, and viola, smooth ride, smooth idle.

Thanks guys.
