5 Speed Trans Problem
THE TRUCK: 1988 F-150 4X4 300 I6 5 SPEED TRANS
THE PROBLEM: DOES NOT WANT TO SHIFT INTO 1st GEAR
OR 5th GEAR VERRY WELL. SOMETIMES NOT
AT ALL. HARD TO TAKE OFF UP HILL IN 2nd GEAR!
-----------------> PLEASE HELP! ANY IDEAS?

I had a 1989 with the same problem you're having. It was the clutch slave cylnder in my case. They are notoriously junky and leak on a regular basis. I had to replace mine 3 times 
! Unfortunately you have to pull the tranny since it's inside of the clutch. At that point you might as well replace the other clutch components while you have it apart. With mine if I was stopped and the truck was in neutral and FOOT OFF the clutch It was almost impossible to get it back into 1st when you stepped back on the clutch. Of course you could have problems in your tranny instead. I thought I remember reading that you are using some sort of tractor gear oil instead of ATF. Maybe you caused some problems by doing so. I seem to remember reading that with this tranny, gear oil might not flow freely enough to properly lubricate the gears, syncro's and such.
