1966 wiring adaptation

i am just completing my latest project and wondering about wiring the horn and the backup lights. the truck is a 1966 f100 sb with a 78-79 tilt column and the 67-72 tail light assembly with back up lights. the transmission is a c6 out of a 75 460 camper special. the transmission has no switch to activate the backup lights and the column has no backup light switch. is my only option using a toggle switch to activate the backup lights. also i have read here where the horn in the later columns is a two wire system instead of the one wire grounding on the 66 stock column. how do i go about wiring the new horn into my old wiring harness. as you can see electrical systems are not my strong suit. thanks a bunch.

The C6 should have a neutral safety switch around the manual shift lever at the trans(shifter linkage hooks there). It also has the backup light switch in it. If it is not there one can be bought at the parts stores. Fraid I'm no help on the horn! Might check the search function on the '73-'79 forum for horn tips.

i got the wiring finished with the exception of the backup lights and the neutral safety switch. maybe i missed the switch on the transmission. really was pretty easy after gathering information on here for the last year or 2. thanks.

The neutral start and backup light switch is the same switch assembly. It's on the column and acutated by the arm snapped on the shift tube.

The trans is out of a newer year, I'm pretty sure it has a switch on the trans. IIRC

i can't check out the transmission or the steering column until this weekend. i am pretty sure the steering column has no switch on it unless it is internal. i have a c6 out of a 72 tbird in the barn and i noticed it had a electrical connector on the driver's side back a few inches from the shift arm but i didn't notice the same hookup on the 75 c6 f250 transmission but i need to crawl under it and look again. another option is to use a cargo light switch to activate the brake lights but i don't really want any extra holes in the dash. thanks again. jim.

Jim, Look on top of the column about 8" up from the firewall. If it is there it will look a lot like an auto gear selector.

The trans mounted switch will look like the one for sale in this ebay auction. ( I am not saying to bid on this, only look at photos and part number)....

The 78-79 will not have the switch mounted on the column, it is on the trans and does look just like the one out on Ebay. I'm not sure that it can be retrofitted to an older c6. You will have to look at the trans to see if there are the 2 mount screw locations cast in the trans.

thanks for the information. the transmission i am using is a 75 3/4t camper special with the deep pan. i am pretty sure there is no such switch on it now but it could have been removed during the rebuild process. hard to remember everything after a 3 year restoration and working on several other vehicles in the middle. if all else fails i will use the aforementioned cargo lite for the b/u lites and do without a neutral safety switch. thanks again.

I'd work on having a neutral start switch. Sometimes a little compromise on safety has a large price to pay. Personal experience I would not want anyone else to have. IMHO!

i inspected the transmission as well as the steering column on saturday for evidence of a previous neutral safety switch. apparently in 1975 the neutral safety switch was on the steering column (i am using a 1975 transmission) and in 78-79 the neutral saftety switch was on the transmission.(i am using a tilt column from 78-79. i am considering using a brake lite switch from a 70-72 model if i can find a place to mount it on the transmission so the shift arm will activate the brake lite-neutral safety switch in the park position. i will have to study it some more. maybe the same sort of setup will work attached to the firewall and using the steering column arm to activate the switch. you are right William, it would be silly to shortcut this safety measure. thanks.
