Should I use Mercon 5 when I change the fluid?

It depends on which automatic you have. The 4R70W requires MERCON V, and the 4R100 cannot use MERCON V.

Look on the blue sticker inside the driver's door frame. If under "TR" there is a "U" then you have a 4R70W. If there is an "E" you have a 4R100.

Guess I have the 4R70W. Since I don't know what the previous owner was using for fluid, should do a complete drain of trans and torgue convertor, and refill with Mercon 5? Also are any fluid additives good for the shudder problem with this tranny?

Yes, I'd change the fluid and use MERCON V. You might want to read this artcile first. I've used this method and it works REAL well!

Keeping fresh MERCON V in the transmission will usually prevent shudder. A full synthetic MERCON V would be even better.

Just an update. I followed the advise in the article. Flushed with merconV. BINGO! No more shudder! I can't beleive the fluid caused it, but its so. I may have even been guilty myself of usuing plain mercon. Thank you for the info.
