no i just got the tranny and the guy i got it from didn't have the shift lever so i need to do somethin....or does anyone know if an arm from another tranny would work
I also could not find the gears on my NP435 - until I found this simple problem. The shifter actually pivots on 2 pins. The pins ride in a slot on each side of a ball. The slots wear out and the shifter gets sloppy. You need to remove the shifter by pushing down and turning the retainer collar where the shifter enters the trans. Remove the retainer then pull out the shifter. I filed down the burrs and then welded in some new metal. Careful work with a grinder restored the slot. You would not believe how nice it shifts now! By the way, if anyone has a used shifter they can spare, I would feel better if I replaced mine rather then use the welded one!
New shifters are available from "truck transmission" places, but they are straight and need to be bent into the proper shape for the differant trucks that use NP435 transmissions. I figured it was easier to "fix" mine, then try to bend a new one to match!
I was reading somewhere that you could just get a rebuild kit for the shift tower.. I don't know if that is the case. The kit I looked at said it came with inserts for the shifter..
