I have an '87 Ranger 2.3L 2wd auto and recently had the gas tank replaced. The mechanic changed the tank and the sending unit. Now for some reason the inertia switch is trpping. Any clue's???
The truck is still at the "machanic's" and he said that it reset's fine then just quit's. Can I bypass the switch to get it out of this "mechanic's" garage?
I'm not sure if he tried to swap out the FPIS.. However, a friend said that the mechanic could of wired the intank pump wrong, could this cause the problem?? The FPIS has never tripped in the 5+ years I've this truck.
As I said in the original post, the truck went to this mechanic for a fuel tank replacement, in which he said the sending unit broke so that was needed, he drove it out of his garage and parked it. Now it won't start, unless the FPIS is reset then only runs for a few minutes..

I think the FPIS is a mechanical switch that opens when impacted. Not really sure if it is also elecrically activated (like a fuse). My first thought is maybe the switch is faulty. There are two fuel pumps on that model, the low pressure in the tank and a high pressure on the chassis. It could be a problem with the high pressure pump.
You certainly don't want to bypass the switch for any length of time, but if you just need to get it out of the "mechanics" garage, I would do it. Just don't forget to get it fixed.
The thing I don't understand is that the truck ran fine with no problem's with any of the fuel system except for a leaking tank. I guess another thing I don't understand is why would it trip when the truck is parked and idling.
Another question is I have an '87 Escort also and was wondering if the FPIS from the Escort would work in the Ranger just so I can get the truck from this "mechanic"
The only thing that I can find is that the switch "opens on impact" so it doesnt double as a fuse. The fusible link takes care of that. The one from the Escort probably will work or get one from Napa/Autozone etc or the boneyard. Napa/Autozone can tell you if the escort uses the same switch. Give em a call
Got the truck running.. the FPIS from my escort work in the truck and vise versa.. The truck ran fine coming from the garage (about 20 miles away) ran fine in the afternoon.. However, while driving down the road it started to have no power and then died. It started back up, ran for a few more miles then died..
The FPIS never tripped like the mechanic said it did.. Sound's like a fuel pump to me..
If your still getting a no-start I would chaeck for spark, it sounds like you should have fuel pressure but I would still put a gauge on it to make sure the pressure is good, 35-45psi.
