Actually what got me into four wheelin was our old Massy ferguson tractor. Got a chance once to cut up with it few years back in a low spot in a pasture where people rarely went so I thought, why not. Never new an old tractor could make huge chunks of mud go so far into the air(And right back onto you) when in 3hi. I've had a bad appetite for it since then.
Originally posted by Redneck-Cowboy The E-Z locker will disengage to let me turn and it's cheap, but for some reason it's only for 87 and up 8.8's. I have an 86. What's the difference?
The differential shaft is a different size for the 86 and earlier in the 8.8 than the 87 and newer ones. Powertraxx makes a version for both while Detroit apparently only makes the EZ Locker for the newer ones.
I grew up on a ranch in southwestern MT, the first truck I drove was a 65 Ford 2 wheel drive. I was 9. Dad's service truck on the ranch was a 3/4 ton Chevy 4x4 that weighed in at 12000. He probably has spent more time with chains on all fours than most guys spend in 4 wheel drive.
Dad's personal truck was a beautiful '69 f250 camper special. It was a 2-wheel drive. One day he decided he needed a 4 wheel drive. So he sold his truck and went out and bought a '78 f150 Ranger. He told Mom he was tired of walking. It was a high school kid truck, and was probably the best exercise machine we've owned. We finally got everything straightened out, and now it is a pretty decent truck. We've done some things in that truck that still amaze me. I got a job at the same ranch, over a summer, and did my fair share of 4-wheelin'. I didn't have a liscence yet, but I laughed every time I started spinning. I love to drive in adverse conditions.
When my grandpa passed away this summer , I was worried about where his truck would go. Dad has three brothers, but for some reason no one wanted it. So I snapped it up for a thousand bucks. It is a '74 f250 highboy automatic 4x4. Like every good Ford owner, I am nursing it back to health, it's one heckuva truck.
My first test drive, I was into street trucks lowered 2wd trucks, and i wanted a f150 to lower, so i went to the local ford dillership they had the truck i wanted it was a 98 f150 step side, but it was 4wd, I test drove it anyway, As i was driving I looked down at the 4wd switch, ok lets see what this is all about, so I pulled off the road put it in four wheel and started climing some hills, right then i relized i was looking at trucks the wrong way, i bout the truck 6" lift and some 35x14.50 super swampers 456 gears detroit locker. i havent looked back sense. i have sold the truck but now own a 79 ford bronco, i dont think i'l be selling this one.
Neat write up about the locker and the jeep. I was thinking I'd try the install myself and after seeing that I'm for sure I will, b/c any mechanic around here is gonna be just as good as me at doing this since it's not a real common thing. Anyway, from what I understand is that the cheaper one just makes a racheting noise when you turn but still performs just as well for 100 bucks less? My truck makes enough crazy noises already, I don't think I'd mind some clicking, just so as long as it doesn't ruin my carriers or anything where as the other one wouldn't. This is mainly gonna be used for mudding, my truck usually keeps all it's wheels on the ground, so no big deal there, one place it will help me though is on side hills, where your truck is tipped to much and both your top side wheels spin. One thing I don't understand is how it will permit me to turn on the street but if I am turning in mud is gonna stay locked or click or what's the deal there, will my front wheels pull me over if I'm trying to turn in mud or will I slide into the creek?
That wouldn't be bad at all, just so long as some installation instructions come with. It would probably be a pretty good deal since he's paying the shipping with him in MD and me in NE. The only bad thing is, is that July is a long way away and that's when I plan to do it. I'm not sure if I wanna be buying stuff yet, cause w/ this truck next thing you know the engine will blow up (wouldn't surprise me) and I'll have all my lift stuff bought and no money for a new engine. Plus you never know when that dream truck might come along cheap (93 to 96 F-350 4x4 w/ a 460 or 7.3 turbo diesel 5spd or a decent bodied 76 to 79 F-250 highboy 4x4 w/ a 4spd and a 390 or 460) and I'll be tired off this one, but I'll never sell it, so it'll always be a play truck, but all my trucks seem to end up being play trucks no matter how nice.
It's in the blood. My dad is the biggest kid I know. He bought a 76' dodge powerwagon extended cab shortbed, 318v8, 4-speed new from the dealer. He wanted it bigger and badder so he started---Thank you peterson's 4 wheel and offroad---headers and a lift. No rancho or trailmaster, oh no. You had to get the springs custom rearched. And he did. And it was boucing and wheelin' till he sold the old girl in 98'. She was unmolested and still running strong. I think dad cried that day--nahhh. He went out and bought a f-250 diesel 4x4 and still runs the beaches from time to time. But I remember him seeing mud and just pulling off the road to have a little fun. Or the time we road home in 4hi with the driveshaft in the bed cuz' "he almost won". I've just always been around it and it's addictive. Good times. Good times.

A dang yota tercel i didnt think anybody else 4X4 them i just blew the tranny up in mine and thats why i bought my ranger.. i had good times in that car. muddin, chicks, muddin, muddin, and did i mention chicks and muddin
One weekend I "talked" into doing a trail ride with some friends from work. Well, when I got to the meet point that morning, of I'm the only one there with a stock truck! So here is my little Ranger with almost bald street tires, sitting next to a bunch of lifted and tricked out fords, chevys, yotas etc. After getting stuck twice, and having to be pulled out/over by a (Lord forgive me ) toyota, I vowed I would not have to be pulled out by them ever again. Well, that vow didnt last to long, but by that point I'd been bitten by the off-road bug. So after 7in of susp/body lift, and some nice 35's, I'm doing much better. And I still have so much that I want to do to my ranger. Next I think will be the new front bumper with a nice warn winch. After that.... who knows.
I think the thought of being able too drive over anything anytime is what got me into it.
Maybe it was learning how too drive in a 46 ****** jeep around the deer leece and roping around the hills and dried creek beds.
I love mudding with my truck so much, that I went and sold my Suzuki sport bike and purchase a Suzuki DR650 thumper dual sport. I've been getting that stuck for the past week and been having a blast. Something about dirt I guess.
