Are there any advantages or dissadvantages to modifying the cam timing 2 degrees advanced or retarded? Or is zero the best possible setting? My gears come with an option to use 2+ 0 or 2-. I was just curiouse what the advantages and disadvantages are.
Also another question, what difference between the 80's EFI 460 and the later 90's 460 gave it a horsepower and torque boost? I have a 95 460 and was just curiouse again as to what is different on my engine.
How does Advancing or Retarding the camshaft's position in the engine affect performance?
Advancing the cam will shift the basic RPM range downward. Four degrees of advance (from the original position) will cause the power range to start approximately 200 RPM sooner. Retarding it this same amount will move the power upward approximately 200 RPM. This can be helpful for tuning the power range to match your situation. If the correct cam has been selected for a particular application, installing it in the normal "straight up" position (per the opening and closing events at .050" lifter rise on the spec card) is the best starting point.

Thx
No problem, someone here will always try to help a fellow Ford Truck Enthusiast.
Thats good cuz I just finished building my EFI 460 and I put a 4 peice timing gear set in. I set it to zero. I did hear that the carburated ones 86- had some cam retarding for smog.
Single and double roller chains were never my favorite. No matter how fat they are, they always get sloppy. I seen countless sloppy double rollers, so I went with a gear drive.
California says gear drives are not smog legal.
I dont give a #$@%. How a gear drive makes a difference on smog, I DONT KNOW. But I dont care.
