Can I ask your help once again? I'm getting a code PO300, "random multiple misfire occurring" on our 1999 Ford Explorer with the 4.0 EFI engine. About 85,000 miles on it.
My son thinks we got a tank of bad gas, and water in the gas led to the computer code. AutoZone guy read the code, but he had no real idea on what could be causing it.
The plugs and wires are essentially new, with about 5,000 miles on them since they were installed.
Make sure none of the wires are laying against the exhaust manifold. Can you feel the misfire when it occurs or hear the engine change sounds when it is idling?
I think I would burn that gas out, get a fresh tank, have the code erased and see if it comes back. Could have been a one time occurrence that set the code.
Another possibilty could be the DIS coilpacks. I am trying to find a Ford disk I have that gives the solution checklist for any code. As soon as I do, I'll see what it says for you....
Thank you for the help! I cleared the computer codes and ran two bottles of gas-line antifreeze through the tank. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it was just bad gas or some water in the last tank.
