New engine

This summer I am looking at getting a new engine for my '92, if I can gather up enough money. The 5.0 engine thats in there only has 101,000 miles, but its been pushing oil like nuts and the gas milage isnt too hot. I'd like to change the engine my self to save money, but I don't have the expirence or tools to rebuild it, so I was wondering if anyone had expirence with the rebuilt engines you can buy from advance auto or checker auto? They have good warrenties, but I was wondering if they last awhile like past 100,000 and if they are built good? I figure if I get one thats rebuilt all ready all I have to do is like bolt on the intake, water pump, alternator, etc.. Thanks for the help.

Check out Summit to see if they have a crate motor for you. I'd look for a crate motor before I paid alot for a rebuild from checker. Or check with one of the reputable machine shops in your area to see how much they would charge for a quality rebuild you could depend on.

I'll have to check around, but I was interested in Checker beacuse they advertised Ford 302 engines starting at $650 for a rebuilt engine. Summit was $1200 for a rebuild, is that because Summit does a better job rebuilding the engine or do they just have performance parts put in? I'm mainly looking for a way to save some money since I'm on a tight budget, but I want it done right too.

Yeah, do your price homework before you jump on a particular deal. I agree w/ 94 F150, look around at local your speed shops, they can tell what you need to do and set you up with right persons to do the job. I think an engine from a independent source rather than a chain will be better in the long run. Plus the independent guys like to throw on goodies, if you get lucky.

$650 doesnt buy many parts, let alone leave much room for labor. Check into the quailty of the parts being used on any rebuilt engine. Go down to a requtable machine shop and go over their rebuilt engine specs with them and find out what they will charge you too.

You sure dont want to break down on your way fishing, do you?
What kind of fishing do you do?

I have also heard some bad reports on the "discount" engines. Alot of them do not last 100,000 miles, but neither do some of the factory motors for that matter. It would be cheaper to remove your motor, have it checked for any cracks in the block and heads, then have it worked over at a machine shop. Doing the removal and then the re-assembly would save you about $800-$900 in labor that the average garage charges. If your engine is bad and needs a new block, you can get one from a salvage yard for cheap and have it re-worked. A quality, complete crate motor will run you about $3000 and up if you want some extra HP goodies. Most of these are re-built blocks to begin with, and still should be checked and gone thru before installation.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'll have to check the shops around here for their prices. 94f150, yea thats the last thing I want, the motor breaking down on me. During the summer I go around and fish for walleye, bass, northern, muskie, panfish and during the winter I go ice fishing mainly for walleye, northern, and panfish.
