Question window tint over window tint?

Hey guys, when I bought my truck it already had the factory window tint on the ex-cab and rear window. I tinted all 5 windows 35%. The drivers side and passengers side are still a little too light for my likeing. I was wondering, if I wanted to get it down to 20%, should I put 50% over the 35% or should I go darker than 50%? Theoretically, 50% means it only lets 50% of the light through. So if I were to add 50%, that should take my tint down to 17.5% right? Has anyone done this before?Any suggestions or thoughts will be really helpful. Thanks in advance.

If your tint is pretty new and not scratched, it should work ok. But I would remove it and apply new darker tint in just one layer.

Hey triton, My tint is 2 years old but still in good shape. I think it might be best to remove the tint and go back with just one layer. Thanx for the info.

Yeah...2 layers of tint may compromise some of the mechanics of the power window mechanism, I think, because of thickness. Take the 35% out and put a darker tint in would be the best bet.

Exclamation Re: Tinting

Be careful of how dark you make the front driver and passenger windows. Most states limit VLT (Visible Light Transmitance) to 35%. Here in TN, a window sticker is required certifying such from the Tint Dealer.

Multiple layers of film will not hurt anything. As for the LEGAL LIMIT is 35% for most states on front 2 door glass, some states require that you have both side mirrors if you have limo on the back glass (any glass behind the 2 front doors) otherwise 20%. Now there is a trick written in the law about the legal limit-- The law states that the front door glass can be tinted with 35% film(38%) but allows up 21% light transmission which turns out to be the 20% film. So if you fight the ticket pray to the god of "nooky" the the judge got some last night cuz it can go either way. I had a tint business and friend tried to fight it judge said "you admit you have 20% film on the doors which is lower than the 21% light transmission therefor you are guilty" didn't care about light trans...the number 20 is lower than 21 end of story. So if you go this route it in your hands. On my EXPLODER I have limo 5% (6% light) on all glass and have 50%on windshield from top to bottom with a limo visor strip across the top. I've been told 4 times that tint is to dark on doors and I reply "Oh, it is. I didn't know that, it was this way when I bought it". & have always gotten "you need to replace this for next time or you might get a ticket".
