I have a 2000 X Limited V10 Gas. A couple weeks ago when I go and start the truck up I get a puff of blue smoke when I start it. I took it to my dealer and he said it is normal. He said it might just be running a little lean. I asked if he did a compression test on it and he said don't need to. Now I'm no certified mechanic but I can and have done a lot of work on cars. In the past when I had older cars I would run a compression and then I would know what valve seal needed to be replace. What are your thought. Is this guy blowing blues smoke or what. Other then that the truck is in great running order.
I am not a mechanic, either, but what you might be interested in examining is your PCV valves. In my 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche, I was in the middle of a cross-country tour with friends when I went through two quarts of oil in just one day. I used OnStar to navigate to the nearest dealership and they replaced my PCV valves and the problem disappeared for good.
My brother has an Audi A8 and had a similar problem, turned out that it is normal under some conditions.
If you start a late model car when it is cold, only to stop it within 30-45sek, then restart it at some time later, it might puff smoke. That's because it's running very rich when it is cold (even if it's 70F) for the first minute of operation.
Then it has all the unburnt stuff in the combustion chamber and you restart it in an hour or 4 later and get the puff.
This only happens when I start it after it has been sitting for a long period of time. Like a day. Once I start it and the smoke comes out it doesn't happen the rest of the day.
I have the same intermitent problem, it only does it on cold days. I have never been low on oil and from prior experience with the v-10 they have always done this (when cold). I don't think you have anything to worry about. Just sit back and enjoy your X.
