90 5.8 4x4 e4od

Just bought a bronco off ebay 1990 xlt 5.8 auto with push button OD. When heated up the trans shifts hard going to the higher gears. MultiState transmissions could not find any code problems on their computer, but say I need a $1700 rebuild. Prev. owner had engine rebuilt 24000 miles ago. What are my options? Any help is good help

I just had an E40D rebuilt got about $1200 in it. Paid $800 for parts and paid a tranny repair man $400 to do the work. Depending on what you are going to do with the truck as far as how you drive it and where. Before I had mine rebuilt I looked at several options. It seemed that no matter what it would cost well over a grand to get a decent one. I have an E40D laying in my shop that I took out of a wrecked 94 for sale. It only has 55,000 miles on it.

My use will be second car / everyday street driver. Plan on pulling the hard top adding a softtop and taking the kids to the lake on occasion. No intention to tow over 2500lbs and never more than a few miles. 4wd will probably only be engaged in heavy Chicago/Wisconsin snow. I have 2 quotes from junkyards from $500 to $1000 without install, checking with a friend that may be able to do install, I am no technician that is for sure. All I want is a good unit without breaking my bank

The great thing about having it rebuilt if they do it right is that they will put all the updates for that tranny in it. With the updates and all new parts the tranny will last long time doing what ever you want with it. Buying from a junkyard may be a cheap way out but put a few $100 more to that and have a better that bran new tranny.

if your'e planning to keep it and its in good shape i'd agree with redneck and rebuild it -- then you know what you have and a warranty -- get one from a junk yard and you might get junk

Thanks, the guy I bought it from is going to send me $500 to help defray the costs, nice effort from a used dealer over ebay, the rest of the truck is good enough to spend the $1200 out of pocket. Any suggestions on best type of softtop to start thinking about? More to come from this new user...

FYI...I just had my E4OD rebuilt about 6 months ago and she is running fine but was rebuilt one other time that I know of back in 12/2...lasted 6 months then had to be rebuilt and it was out of 6 month warranty. But I believe the guy who rebuilt it the first time just patched it to sell it.

Mike...BTW, curious about the top myself.
